What We Do

We are a cohesive body of inventors and do-ers.

We utilize RFID – the essential building block of Internet of Things (IoT) technology – to enable anyone to track, operate, and most efficiently manage assets. Assets such as retail inventory, WIP or finished goods, manufacturing equipment, surgical tools, wine bottles, or humans for safety compliance in a post-COVID world.

Industry consensus favors Ultra High Frequency (UHF) 800-960 MHz as the preferred frequency band due to its optimal balance of versatility, read range, tag costs, and tag longevity – as compared to other battery powered IoT for example. UHF RAIN RFID is by far the most ubiquitous frequency range used in Health Care, Industrial, Aerospace & Defense use cases.

A Little History

  • 1920s - 1940s

    Radar invented

Radar was first invented as the backbone technology to identify friendly and foe aircraft. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an identification method using radar & radio frequency to identify objects.

  • 1960s

    Broader commercialization

RFID application began to expand beyond just the military to larger commercial markets such as electronic tolls, livestock, and industrial automation.

  • 1970s - 1990s

    Global alliances & standards emerge

Academic institutions, government labs, and independent researchers all work collaboratively to iron out the foundational technology. RFID becomes ubiquitous enough that global experts banned together to establish standards, and share best practices. Organizations such as the International Standard Organization, Auto-ID Center of MIT, AIM Standards, and the newer RAIN RFID Alliance, which was founded April 2014 by Google, Intel, Impinj, Smartrac and AIM.

  • 1992

1st RFID toll roads in USA

USA establishes first automated toll payment systems utilizing RFID

  • 2003

    High profile RFID deployment failure

Walmart announces all supplier companies will need to use RFID by 2006 for instant mass verification of inventory shipments, with potential saving in the hundreds of millions for this use case alone. Due to a combination of factors such as high tag costs and installation challenge risks, this initiative became a spectacular failure.

  • 2010s

Passive UHF RFID tags become ubiquitous and affordable

Passive or battery-less Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID tags become extremely affordable at mass scale ~10 cents per tag. Previously, these tags costed $1.00 or more. Many Fortune 500 companies have contracted with tag manufacturers to do “source tagging.”

Industry consensus favors UHF 800-960 MHz as the preferred frequency band due to its optimal balance of versatility, read range, tag costs, and tag longevity. It is by far the most ubiquitous frequency range used in Health Care, Industrial, Aerospace & Defense use cases.

  • Perfect conditions emerge as the foundations laid for "dark fiber" of RFID

The proliferation of UHF passive tags continue to solidify RFID as the preferred backbone of Internet of Things (IoT). Mainstream IoT adoption will revolutionize data analytics, just as barcodes spurred an entire multi-billion dollar derivative market of consumer marketing. In addition, global adoption of 5G will become another tailwind for RFID. The combination of data analytics and 5G will become an indomitable force optimizing all aspects of commerce.

The Lineup

Come see why the top global commercial operators are choosing RAIN RFID IoT systems for their Real Time Location System (RTLS) needs.
